Rohit keeps on making and breaking records for fun and writing his name into the history books. He had a spectacular 2019 where he amassed ten centuries across all formats of international cricket and also reinvented himself as an opener in Test cricket.
His performances in 2019 took him to the top spot when the list for openers with most runs in a calendar year is considered. With his 63 run knocks against West Indies in the series decider in Cuttack which helped India clinch the series, Rohit broke a 22-year-old record which belonged to Sanath Jayasuriya.
The Sri Lankan legend who batted at the top of the opening order previously held the record for most runs in a single year in international cricket when he scored 2387 runs in 1997.
India’s own Virender Sehwag is next on the list. The powerful hard-hitting batsman scored 2355 runs across all formats in 2008.
Rohit Sharma has ended 2019 with 2442 runs in international cricket at an average of 53.12, with 10 centuries and 10 half-centuries. While most of his runs came in One Day International Cricket, he also amassed 556 runs in Tests and 396 runs in T20Is.
Rohit needed just 9 runs before the 3rd ODI against West Indies to equal SanathJayasuriya’s two-decade-long record given that he was on 2379 runs for the year before the match began.
Sachin Tendulkar (1998), SouravGanguly (1999) and Rohit’s teammate Virat Kohli (2016, 2017, 2018) are the only other Indian batsmen in history to have scored more runs across all formats than Rohit did in 2019.
And by the looks of it, his immaculate record as the highest run-scorer in a single calendar year as an opener will stand the test of time.
