India U19 side couldn’t have had a better start to their tour of South Africa as they registered a comfortable nine-wicket victory over the hosts at the Buffalo Park in East London on the 26th of December, taking a 1-0 lead in the series as a result.
South Africa U19 side won the toss and decided to bat first. Their batsmen faltered and crumbled under the pressure as Indian U19 bowlers ran riot and bundled the opposition for only 187 runs. Luke Beaufort was the highest scorer for the opponents, having added 64 runs to the board. While it’s true that openers Andrew Louw and Jack Lees began their innings well, they couldn’t convert their good starts into something meaningful and the rest of the batting order collapsed once they gave way.
Among the bowlers, Ravi Bishnoi had a field day as he claimed three wickets. He was joined in this by Kartik Tyagi, Shubhang Hegde, and Atharva Ankolekar who all shared the spoils after picking up a brace of wickets each to bowl South Africa U19 side out in 48.3 overs.
In response, the Indian batting order had little to no issues at all as the opening pair of Divyaansh Saxena and N Tilak Varma put up a mammoth 127 run stand for the first wicket. Once, Tilak Varma got out, the onus fell to Saxena and Kumar Kushagra’s shoulders to guide the side past the finishing line. The former scored 86 runs and his innings included 11 fours while Kushagra remained not out at 43 and the pair took India to their first win in the series with nine wickets and seven overs to spare.
