After being closed for eight years three stands I, J and K which has combined capacity of 12000 seats the seals have opened on Friday in the existence of Ravi Kumar, Zonal officer of greater Chennai corporation. After the world cup 2011 three stands were closed but opened for the Pakistan-India ODI series in 2012. The sealed stands for eight years resulted from keeping hosting global events like IPL 2019, world T20 in 2016.
The stands were closed because the Chennai corporation has said that the setback period between Madras cricket club and them was not sufficient. Chennai cricket club agreed to demolish the gym to create space but couldn’t happen because of the lease with Tamil Nadu Cricket Association which ended in 2015.
Recently the gym was demolished to unseal the stands. After demolishing was completed TNCA invaded into a New lease with the Tamil Nadu government TNCA also took permission from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) and Chennai corporation for clearance of three stands in Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
